Moodle platform application in study of English for specific purposes

Abstract

Доповідь присвячена використанню системи дистанційного навчання Moodle в практиці викладання професійної англійської мови в світі проблеми формування комунікативних умінь іноземної мови у сучасних судномеханіків в галузі морської освіти. Вивчення іноземної мови, що є обов'язковим компонентом професійної підготовки майбутніх фахівців у морській технічній сфері (механіків), також відбувається на основі компетентного підходу. Автор визначає, які елементи курсу і типи питань підходять для поповнення словникового запасу студентів, розвитку навичок професійної англійської мови. Розглядається та обґрунтовується ефективність дистанційно-аудиторного навчання, при якому студенти здатні набувати і контролювати власні знання, а роль викладача змінюється з транслятора на тьютора. Доклад посвящен использованию системы дистанционного обучения Moodle в практике преподавания профессионального английского языка в мире проблемы формирования коммуникативных умений иностранного языка в современных судомеханики в области морского образования. Изучение иностранного языка, является обязательным компонентом профессиональной подготовки будущих специалистов в морской технической сфере (механиков), также происходит на основе компетентного подхода. Автор определяет, какие элементы курса и типы вопросов подходят для пополнения словарного запаса студентов, развития навыков профессионального английского языка. Рассматривается и обосновывается эффективность дистанционно-аудиторного обучения, при котором студенты способны приобретать и контролировать собственные знания, а роль преподавателя меняется с транслятора на тьютора. The article is devoted to the use of the Moodle learning system in the practice of teaching professional English in view of the problem of the building up the communicative skills of a foreign language in modern marine engineers in the marine education branch. Particular attention is paid to the component of distance learning, aimed at developing the skills of listening, writing and reading while studying English. The study of a foreign language, which is a compulsory component of the training of future specialists in the marine engineering, also takes place on the basis of a competent approach. The development of the Internet and modern methods of exchanging different information allows us to create and apply new learning methods in education, such as electronic notes, encyclopedias, tests, glossaries, questionnaires, virtual labs. One of the options for using such techniques and technologies is the learning platform Moodle, specially designed to create high-quality online courses by teachers. Using Moodle, the teacher can create courses by filling them with texts, supporting files, presentations, survey forms, etc. To use Moodle, it is enough to have any web browser that makes using this learning environment convenient either for the teacher and for students. According to the results of the students' tasks, the teacher can assess the students’ work and make comments. Thus, Moodle is an important tool for creating teaching material to provide interaction between participants in the learning process. The authors determine elements of the course and types of questions are suitable for replenishing the vocabulary of students, the development of professional English skills. The effectiveness of distance learning is considered and substantiated, in which students are able to acquire and control their own knowledge, and the role of the teacher changes from the translator to the tutor.
