Зміст навчання англійської мови майбутніх офіцерів машинного відділення

Abstract

Йдеться про роль нормативно-правових документів міжнародного рівня у врегулюванні змісту навчання англійської мови майбутніх моряків. На прикладі майбутніх морських офіцерів машинного відділення проаналізовано вимоги основоположних конвенцій ММО, а також рекомендації відповідних модельних курсів щодо володіння англійською мовою означеною категорією фахівців. Конкретизацію вимог здійснено через висвітлення характерних професійних функцій, тобто завдань і обов’язків офіцерського складу машинної команди. Втіленням здобутих знань з англійської мови, сформованих навичок і вмінь, а також практичного досвіду їх застосування визнано професійну англомовну комунікативну компетентність фахівців. Коротко описано спеціалізований з англійської мови для моряків модельний курс 3.17 – Maritime English як документ ММО інформаційно-рекомендаційного характеру, покликаний сприяти формуванню вищеозначеної компетентності. The article focuses on the basic regulations enforced by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) towards the Maritime English learning content. To this purpose the requirements of the fundamental IMO conventions as well as the recommendations of the corresponding model courses on the Maritime English language acquisition have been analyzed in terms of future marine engineer officers. To explore the changes in the Maritime English learning content due to the modern professional communication needs the specification of required performances has been carried out by characterizing marine engineers’ professional functions, i.e. their principal tasks and duties while working in the engine room. According to STCW the manifestation of the Maritime English proficiency the professional communicative competency is considered to be. Its minimum standard implies Use of English in a written and oral formand its specific training outcomes mean adequate knowledge of English to enable future marine engineers to use engineering publications and to perform engineering duties. Among the key documents identifying the basic requirements to the Maritime English teaching and learning process is the IMO model course 3.17 Maritime English. Created on the basis of the STCW Convention it reflects the most important changes and the urgent needs of the maritime industry in respect of Maritime English proficiency. Being revised in 2015 following the Manila amendments to the STCW Convention, it is expected to assist in the implementation of the STCW Convention requirements regarding the English language and coordinate the future seafarers’ communication skills training in Maritime Education and Training (MET) institutions all over the world. It is recognized that given the international status of the seafarer’s profession the development of Maritime English communicative competency should be harmonized by a number of regulations, but both of international and national importance.
