On the professional identity and maritime English communicative competence relationships

Abstract

The research findings on the relationships between the processes of future seafarers’ professional identity formation and their professional English-language communicative competence development are presented. The factors specifying the nature of these processes are investigated. The role of the English language in the development of professional identification of future seafarers is analyzed. The advantages of professional self-identification and professional identity of a future specialist are revealed. The importance of the English language as an effective means of professional self-identification of future seafarersis substantiated. The stages of the formation of professional identity are analyzed in their correlationwith the educational process at maritime higher institutions in general and the specifics of English language teaching in particular. The individually determined statuses and levels of professional identity, as well as the specifics of their manifestation in future seafarers’ Maritime English communicative competence are analized. Evolution arychanges in the process of formation of professional identity are characterized throughthe prism of its communicative component and are recognized as actions to establisha professional communicative identity that have a direct impact on the communicative competence of future specialists. Представлено результати дослідження взаємозв’язку між процесами формування професійної ідентичності майбутніх моряків та розвитком їхньої професійної англомовної комунікативної компетентності. Досліджено фактори, що визначають природу цих процесів. Проаналізовано роль англійської мови у розвитку професійної ідентифікації майбутніх моряків. Розкрито переваги професійної самоідентифікації та професійної ідентичності майбутнього фахівця. Обґрунтовано важливість англійської мови як ефективного засобу професійної самоідентифікації майбутніх моряків. Проаналізовано етапи формування професійної ідентичності у їх співвідношенні з навчальним процесом у морських вищих навчальних закладах загалом та специфікою викладання англійської мови зокрема. Проаналізовано індивідуально зумовлені статуси та рівні професійної ідентичності, а також особливості їх прояву в комунікативній компетентності з морської англійської мови майбутніх моряків. Еволюційні зміни у процесі формування професійної ідентичності характеризуються крізь призму її комунікативної складової та визнаються як дії щодо становлення професійної комунікативної ідентичності, що безпосередньо впливають на комунікативну компетентність майбутніх спеціалістів.
