Introduction of international standards for teaching maritime English as a guarantee of safety at sea

Abstract

У статті описані основні аспекти важливості морської англійської мови для професійних цілей. У численних статтях і виступах неодноразово підкреслювалося, що недостатнє знання морської англійської мови спричиняє значні людські та матеріальні втрати, що, насамперед, стосується моряків, для яких англійська мова не є рідною. Щоб уникнути подібних ситуацій, Міжнародна морська організація затвердила «Стандартні морські фрази Міжнародної морської організації (IMO) для спілкування на морі», які використовуються для спілкування на морі, на підходах до портів, водних шляхах і гаванях, а також для внутрішнього зв’язку суден. Аналіз результатів дослідження показує, що дослідники все більше уваги приділяють питанню численних зіткнень суден, які відбуваються через невдалі комунікативні спроби вирішення ситуації, тому використовується розмовна форма спілкування замість стандартизованої. Наслідки неефективної комунікації на борту розглядаються на прикладі найбільших морських трагедій. Акцентується увага на важливості наявності достатнього мінімуму стандартних виразів для ефективної взаємодії в екстремальних ситуаціях. The article describes the main aspects of the effectiveness usage of the maritime English language for professional purpose. In numerous articles and speeches, it has been repeatedly emphasized that inadequate knowledge of maritime English causes significant human and material losses, which, first of all, concerns seafarers for whom English is not their native language. In order to avoid such situations, the International Maritime Organization has approved the «International Maritime Organization Standard Marine Phrases for Communication at Sea» used for communication at sea, on port approaches, waterways and harbors, as well as for inland ship communication. communication on ships with a multilingual team; to provide assistance to maritime educational institutions in achieving the abovementioned goals. Special attention is paid to researching the possibilities of a systematic approach to teaching standard phrases for communication at sea in communicative classes on Maritime English. The analysis of the research results shows that researchers are paying more attention to the issue of numerous ship collisions that occur due to unsuccessful communicative attempts to resolve the situation, so a conversational form of communication is used instead of a standardized one. The consequences of ineffective communication on board are considered using the example of the largest tragedies at sea. Emphasis is placed on the importance of having a sufficient minimum of standard expressions for effective interaction in extreme situations.
