Professionally-oriented communicative competency of seafarers

Abstract

Хоча система морської підготовки та освіти в Україні вже сформована, у випускників все ж спостерігається недостатність умінь виконувати специфічні обов’язки, особливо при необхідності застосування морської англійської мови при виконанні професійної діяльності на судні. Цей факт підкреслює необхідність розвитку системи професійної підготовки з метою підвищення якості та ефективності вищої морської освіти та розвитку комунікативної компетенції майбутніх мореплавців зокрема. Стаття розкриває зростаючу потребу у формуванні та розвитку професійно-орієнтованої комунікативної компетенції під час навчання здобувачів вищої освіти у відповідності до вимог щодо рівня володіння морської англійською мовою, які встановлюються Міжнародною морською організацією. У дослідженні доведено, що професійно-орієнтовану комунікативну компетенцію майбутніх моряків слід розглядати як комплексний феномен, що необхідно вивчати з точки зору систематичного підходу, як єдину інтегровану систему, що включає в себе певний набір компонентів.

Though the system of maritime training and education in Ukraine has already been formed there is still the lack of graduates’ ability to perform specific duties especially the difficulties in the use of maritime English during shipboard practice and professional activity. It stresses out the need to develop the system of professional training to provide the growth of quality and effectiveness of higher maritime education and to guarantee the development of communicative competency of future seafarers. The current study investigates the growing need of professionally-oriented communicative competency formation and development while teaching cadets/students of higher maritime institutions is based on the requirements stipulated by the International Maritime Organization to the level of English language proficiency and the recognition of the English language as the working language of multicultural shipboard environment. The research shows that the professionally-oriented communicative competency of seafarers must be regarded as a complex phenomenon which must be studied from the point of view of systematic approach as a single integral system that encompasses a specific amount of components. The study demonstrates the structure of the professionally-oriented communicative competency of seafarers and analyses the core structural components of the professionally-oriented communicative competency of seafarers.
